7 Things to Prepare Before Building Your Website: A Checklist
Preparing a few things before you commission a website shortens the build time and lowers the cost. Start without preparation and you end up with repeated revisions that cost more time and money. Here are the 7 essentials to have ready before you begin.
1. Define the purpose
First, be clear about "what do I want this website to achieve?" Taking bookings, increasing phone enquiries, showing your menu and prices, selling online – your structure and features depend on the goal.
2. Collect 3 reference sites
Find 2–3 competitor or industry sites you like. Having concrete examples of "I like this feel and this menu layout" makes communication with your designer much faster.
3. Logo and brand colors
Prepare your logo file (the original if possible) and the colors you want to use. If you do not have a logo yet, you can have it designed together with the site.
4. Photos and images
Real photos – your storefront, interior, signature dishes or products, and staff – greatly increase trust. Gather good-quality landscape photos in advance.
5. Your written content
Writing your text in advance – company introduction, service descriptions, opening hours, location, and contact details – speeds up the build. Even a rough draft is enough.
6. Domain and email
Decide on the domain you want (e.g. yourshop.com.au) and consider whether you need business email addresses too.
7. Budget and timeline
Setting a rough budget and a target launch date lets your provider propose the best solution within that range.
